Tears for Fears are notorious for their self-quotes and internal references, some could even be called in-jokes. I'm going to try and collect them all here. Comment if you've got one to be added to the list.
On the new songs, we've got:
- The 12" version of "Change" uses a reversed vocal sample from "Pale Shelter"
- "When we've denied the hurting" in "Watch Me Bleed" (which makes sense on a concept album)
- "Head over Heels" refers back to two Graduate songs - "Acting My Age" and "Ambition"
- "Feel the pain, talk about it - If you're a worried man, you can shout about it" in STSOL refers back to both "The Hurting" ("Feel the pain, feel the sorrow) and "Shout"
- The 1990 live version of "All You Need is Love" includes another permutation of those words ("Feel the sorrow, feel the pain")...
- ...as well as a reference to the lyrical motif (appears in three songs) and once suggested album title of TSOL ("The sun and the moon, the wind and the rain")...
- ...and a reference to another suggested album title that Roland had been carrying around for years and would eventually use in 1996 ("Yes I'm still waiting for Raoul and the Kings of Spain")
- The line "working hour is over" in "Advice for the Young at Heart", referring to "The Working Hour"
- The song title "Secret World" reflects back to "Too many people, living in a secret world" from AFTYAH
- The cover of "Ashes to Ashes" includes in its spoken bits the line "Schrödinger's cat is dead to the world", the title line from a song that would only appear one year later
- "Blown away our four-leaf clover" in "Me and My Big Ideas", a reference to "Head over Heels" (the line "This is my four-leaf clover", and the four-leaf clover used as a symbol in the video and artwork)
- The opening lines of "Ladybird", "Tell me a story of mind over matter" are probably a reference to "Mind over matter won't stop all your chatter" from "Badman's Song".
- Likewise, the chorus of "Ladybird" has the line "your house is on fire", which also appears in "Mothers Talk"
On the new songs, we've got:
- "what's that shape" (The Tipping Point), originally from "Falling Down"
- "rushing like the wind" (No Small Thing), originally from "Elemental"
- "I gave your god a bone" (My Demons), referring to "They tell you on the phone to give your god a bone" (Everybody Loves a Happy Ending)
- The distorted sample of a station announcer saying "Last train to Norwich" that was prominent in "Schrödinger's Cat" appears at the tail end of "Master Plan"
- "When sirens start calling" (Let It All Evolve) sounds like "So many reasons why you hear the sirens calling" (Quiet Ones)
