As has been discussed at some length on the Steve Hoffman forums, "We are Broken" in its original form from the mid-1983 "Pale Shelter" single is still pretty rare to come across. The remix "Broken Revisited", which appeared as a bonus track on the 1985 cassette of Songs from the Big Chair, is much easier to find. The only CD confirmed to have the proper "We are Broken" is the very limited promo "Tears Laid Low: A Tears for Fears Alter Collection"
"Famous Last Words - The Collection" and "Mad World: The Collection" both claim to have "We are Broken" but while the length fits, it is the "Broken Revisited" mix without the reverse vocal intro.
The Hurting deluxe edition and box set, in fact, have the full "Broken Revisited", which is clearly an error.
My theory is that "Broken Revisited" was done for possible inclusion on Songs from the Big Chair, before the band decided to re-record the first half as the live arrangement and use the live recording of the second half. This would explain both the addition of reverb (making it fit more with the SFTBC sound) and the fact that the reversed vocals also show up at the end of "Mothers Talk".
Somebody uploaded the original dry mix of "We are Broken", although it's sadly taken from a vinyl record:
Has anybody found a version that actually comes from that elusive "Tears Laid Low" CD?
(Another version of the same recording is the "Early Mix" that was on the SFTBC box set - which has a much longer outro and some crazy saxophone.)
