What would the release have looked like? We know that plenty of versions were done but shelved except for the one that did slip out in Canada. My guess would be something like this:
Regular 7":
Year of the Knife - Steve Chase 7" Edit [Seeds of Love Box Set, Disc 3, Track 5] Year of the Knife - Steve Chase Instrumental [Disc 3, Track 12] ("Canadian Single Version - Instrumental")
12" and CD single:
Year of the Knife - Steve Chase Remix [Disc 2, Track 15] ("Canadian Single Version") Year of the Knife - Paul O'Duffy & Chris Hughes Mix [Disc 2, Track 8] ("The Mix") Year of the Knife - Steve Chase Instrumental [Disc 3, Track 12] ("Canadian Single Version - Instrumental")
What do you think?
I'm wondering if the odd half-instrumental version of "Advice" was maybe also intended for release...

Jules, can you answer a question for me...? I was recently listening to "The Seeds Of Love" set, and I had forgotten that "Year Of The Knife" appears to be live. Is that the case? I listened to the original, the Steve Chase remix, the instrumental, and the Canadian versions. I don't hear any "audience" noise at the end of the song. Was this a case of creating a live atmosphere just for the recording? If so... why? Thank you. Chris

The crowd noises were apparently taken from a concert on the Big Chair tour in San Antonio, Texas (September 12, 1985). If you listen to the instrumental early mix (disc 3 of the box set) you can hear the same noises underneath the orchestral intro: In the end, they left off that overture.
