Classic Tears for Fears: The Universal Masters DVD Collection
This DVD is a companion piece of sorts to the CD of the same name, though it doesn’t contain the videos for “Cold” and “Famous Last Words”, replaces the US Remix of “Mothers Talk” (which is on the CD) with the 1st mix early video and adds “Mad World” (which is conspicuously absent from the CD).

Secret World – Live in Paris (live video/CD)
Recorded live in Paris at a festival, this live album and video isn’t exactly bad, but somewhat underwhelming. It seems that the band filmed the festival appearance instead of a regular gig to have a larger live audience for the DVD, but the downsides are many – compared to other shows of the same tour the setlist is only half as long and misses many key tracks, and the band playing in the light of day instead of the evening also takes its toll on the entire band, who are unusually tired and (Roland in particular) not in top form. Continuing the tradition, the DVD has some weird visual effects applied to it and some very odd camera angles. The CD includes three bonus tracks: A radio edit of the studio track “Secret World” (thankfully with slightly better mastering than the album version on ELAHE), the new studio recording “Floating Down The River” and a track from Curt Smith’s “Mayfield” project, “What Are We Fighting For”.

Compilations – Official and Budget
Tears Roll Down: Greatest Hits 1982-1992
The first serious TFF compilation. Released on CD, LP and VHS (the video clips for all twelve songs – later also on DVD), it includes eleven tracks from the first three TFF albums along with the new recording “Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down)”. Apart from “Head over Heels” all tracks are featured in the LP versions. Given that neither Roland nor Curt are particularly fond of “The Way You Are”, it’s no surprise that the song was left off despite being the only missing UK Top 40 hit.

Saturnine, Martial & Lunatic
After “Flip” and “Tears Laid Low”, the idea wasn’t exactly new – and it was probably a sound idea, what with the bizarre and often wonderfully unusual tracks TFF liked to put on their b-sides. But the first CD was a Japan exclusive (compiled specially for the “Collusion” box set to sit alongside the first three albums) and the second a rare promo sampler (and to this day the *only* CD to include “We Are Broken”, unbelievably). So “Saturnine, Martial & Lunatic” was the first time that most of the band’s b-sides were available on a full-length CD. Though with “Wino”, early versions of “The Prisoner” and “Ideas as Opiates”, “Music for Tables”, “Ghost Papa” and the original version plus second remix of “Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams” all missing, it’s definitely not complete. Also a bit odd is the CD debut of “The Way You Are”, as it wasn’t a b-side but actually an a-side, but its experimental nature and lack of commercial success probably were reasons for including it here and not on “Tears Roll Down”.

Gold (2 CD)
While this is one of many (!) budget compilations released by Universal over the years, it deserves special notice for quite a few reasons. It is the only CD that includes material from all six studio albums to date and it has pretty much all the key singles. Worth noticing is also the fact that the ELAHE songs have been mastered with more dynamic range, making for a slightly less fatiguing and more ‘natural’-sounding listen. As a straight “Greatest Hits”-type CD it doesn’t do much in the album track department, with only a couple of non-single tracks on disc 2 and one b-side. However, it does include two rare new tracks in the form of “Floating Down the River” (otherwise only available as a bonus track on “Secret World – Live in Paris”) and an exclusive live version of “Mad World” which features the same slowed-down arrangement as on “Secret World” but is more energetic and focused.

Rule the World
This new compilation is a rather slim affair that only includes the very essence of TFF's singles but is interesting for the inclusion of the two new tracks "I Love You But I'm Lost" and "Stay". Whether those will be part of the new album remains to be seen.
