Favourite TFF Album: The Hurting

Since about 1999 or 2000 when I was about 9 or 10. My dad was a fan and would play me their stuff, then I'd listen to his CDs myself and watch "Scenes From The Big Chair" VHS.
I got really hooked into the band with "The Hurting", at the time I first heard it, I was about 9 or 10, and I was very much attracted to how dark it is. Pale Shelter blew me away. It was a good part of getting me into darker music in general. I always liked Songs From The Big Chair too, but it was only a few years later that I really started to appreciate The Seeds Of Love, and later the other albums. Badman's Song was a good catalyst for me becoming an audiophile. After that I became interested in hearing the rest of their material.
Years down the line they are definitely one of my favorite bands and I'm almost like a completist. There's something deep and atmospheric about their music, particularly in Roland and Curt's vocals. I look forward to the new material.

For me it was Songs From The Big Chair and specifically "Head Over Heals" that blew me away and made me a huge fan. Went back and discovered The Hurting, and then waited what seemed an eternity (because it was back then) for The Seeds of Love to come out!!

My first exposure was the first US single from SFTBC, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." It didn't really wow me at the time, and neither did second single "Shout," but the third single "Head Over Heels" blew me away as it did jeffmoasopiates. I place "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" in a strange trilogy of songs that represented a band's first big hit on US radio, but that weren't really representative of that band's sound. This trilogy would be: "Everybody Wants to Rule the World"--Tears for Fears "Don't You Forget About Me"--Simple Minds "People are People"--Depeche Mode All of these songs were their respective groups' first real dent in Top 40 radio, but when you explore their albums more deeply you realize that it was just the tip of the iceberg.

I think I must've heard "Rule the World" quite a bit on the radio when I first started listening to pop radio but it didn't do anything for me. To be fair, the whole 80s thing was completely new to me at the time and I might have felt differently about it if the first TFF song I'd heard would be "Badman's Song" (as I had been mainly listening to blues at that time). I really didn't like "Shout" or "Mad World"... strange world! If you had told me then that one day I might start a forum for TFF I would've looked at you like that:

(Hope you don't mind me posting in a bit of an older thread!) Earlier this year actually. I found out about Everybody Wants To Rule The World through a cover version (the TFF original was better to be entirely honest). Liking the song, I eventually decided to give the whole Songs From The Big Chair album a go and it made a big impression on me. I have a personal story about how big that impact was, though I'd prefer to save that for another time. After that, I listened to The Hurting and The Seeds of Love. The Hurting was pretty good as it was, but I found Seeds of Love absolutely amazing and that's when I felt confident enough to call myself a fan. I've only listened to the other three last week. My thoughts about them will be in the other available threads.

No, absolutely post in older threads, that's what I made them for And I'm certainly curious to hear more from you. Don't be afraid to open new threads as well (this goes for all users and people perhaps still lurking). Sorry for not replying earlier. I still hope this forum gets populated enough at some point that it can entertain itself without me having to be involved all the time... I agree with you re: Seeds of Love

It was June 1985. Found "Songs from the Big Chair", in a record store down south. Been a fan ever since, including Roland's work without Curt.

Finally getting around to posting my TFF story... thanks for the great forum Jules! I'm sure it'll get busy in here once things pick up with them again. My first exposure to them was at my first record store job in 1984. I was quickly hooked and on a quest to pick up all the singles I had missed. Mothers Talk was released around the time I got into them so I always have a soft spot for the song and played both UK 12" singles to death at the time! Their early singles were wonderful with excellent, experimental b-sides and great remixes. No throwaway tracks here! The Hurting was the very first CD I bought even though I didn't have a CD player until months later. I was able convince my manager at the record store to let me take home the store's CD player over night once in a while so I could play the disc. Shout was released around Christmas that year and so I always relate it to the holiday season even though it is far from a Christmas song. Songs From The Big Chair did not disappoint but my musical tastes were mutating by the time Seeds of Love was released and I didn't get into that album as much. I was back into them in a big way with Elemental though and am happy to see they're still making music. I've only seen them live twice... once in Chicago for the SftBC tour and a few years ago, just over the border, at a casino in Oklahoma of all places. The casino show was fantastic and the audience was very enthusiastic. Roland and Curt seemed to be having a great time on stage.

Cool story jamesc! Hey, I'd rather relate "Shout" to Christmas than "Last Christmas"!

Summer of 1985 when Shout blew me away. That fall I started looking at the back material for the band and "discovered" The Hurting and loved it. Many different songs and sounds since those days but I'm still loving the band. I have liked and loved all of their music since, though I *do* wish I had some new music to hear and with which to evangelize the band.

I already really dug all the songs from Songs From the Big Chair that were being played on Q105, Tampa Bay Radio, but wouldn't really call myself a TFF "fan." Fast forward a few months to my first high school dance at the Kapok Tree Inn, this really cool restaurant/resort-like place in the city where I grew up, St. Petersburg. So there I was with my friends on the edge of the dance floor, just trying to get up the nerve to go "dance." (Yes, in quotation marks. I'm not sure that what I actually did could qualify as "dancing!") Suddenly "Head Over Heels" comes on, a song that I really loved, so I threw caution to the wind, stepped onto the floor, and "danced." Tears For Fears therefore holds a special place in my life just for that moment.
In honor of that truly great tune, I'll link a new version of it that I just discovered last week:

Welcome headoverheels... Nice story & here's looking forward to more posts from you! (I don't assume that's an actual period remix but it's still nicely made. Apparently the multitracks are "out there"... I might also want to try my hand at remixing some of those songs )
